We didn’t see much problems from the process monitor when we tried to simulate and look at process monitor
entries at our end we see that the hotfix.exe just creates SQL9_Hotfix_KB921896_authentication.out

why visual  studio just-in-time debugger pops up during the authentication of the account?

After little bit of a struggle we found that there was a invalid alias that was created for that sql server instance and it was located in

of the registry. What happened was, when a setup run and it goes to the authentication screen we enter the Credentials. After entering the credentials the setup tries to connect to the sql server instance to check whether such login exist. In our case, the setup was not able to reach the instance due to wrong alias created. We removed the alias and setup was able to connect to the existing instance ,everything got installed.
